Meanwhile, the athletics department’s intentions to invest in basketball are presented to the university’s board of trustees on Feb. 4. On the agenda of the meeting is the approval of a project to build a new basketball training gymnasium.
It’s part of a project that’s been on the horizon for Auburn athletics for a long time, in some ways since volleyball moved to Auburn Arena years ago.
Director of Athletics Allen Greene and Associate Vice President of the school Dan King will seek approval to initiate the project and begin selecting an architect.
Also on the agenda is final approval of the women’s basketball locker room renovation project at Auburn Arena. The building opened in 2010. Auburn upgraded the men’s locker room in the offseason ahead of the 2019-20 season.
The Opelika-Auburn News was assured Thursday that Auburn Athletics is actively working to devise plans to create more practice space for men’s and women’s basketball teams, while also looking to renovate office space in the building which has not been upgraded since the open arena.
Pearl and his team will come out of SEC play on Saturday when the Tigers host Oklahoma in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
