PEARL RIVER, NY – The federal Christmas holiday is actually Friday, December 24 – Christmas Eve – because Christmas Day is Saturday in 2021.
So what is open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day around Orangetown? Many shops will not be open and many services will not be available, so you will need to factor this into your vacation plans.
Transit schedules in Rockland County will be adjusted.
Thursday – Early Christmas Getaway:
Metro-North Hudson Line trains will operate on the current weekday schedule, plus an early morning getaway train to Tarrytown departing Grand Central at 1:50 p.m. The Haverstraw-Ossining ferry will coordinate.
Friday – Christmas Eve:
- TOR buses will provide regular service on Friday, December 24
- TRIPS paratransit buses will provide regular service.
- Coach USA Rockland Coaches buses will operate the current weekday service.
- Coach USA Shortline will provide weekend service.
- Coach USA (Exit 14) Express will operate a limited service.
- Hudson Link buses will provide regular service.

- Clarkstown MiniTrans buses will operate on weekdays.
- Metro-North Hudson Line trains will operate on Saturdays, with a surcharge in the morning and evening
- the trains. Port Jervis Line trains will operate at weekends.
- NJT Main/Bergen Line and Pascack Valley trains will provide weekend service.
- The Haverstraw-Ossining ferry will be coordinated with Metro-North Hudson Line train schedules.
Saturday – Christmas Day:
- TOR buses will provide Sunday service on lines 59, 91, 92, 93 and Loop 3; without service on lines 94, 95, 97, Loop 1 and Loop 2.
- TRIPS paratransit buses will operate ADA service only.
- Coach USA Rockland Coaches buses will not operate on Christmas Day.
- Coach USA Shortline will provide weekend service.
- Coach USA (Exit 14) Express will not operate.
- Hudson Link buses will operate weekend service on Christmas Day.

- Mail will be delivered as usual on Christmas Eve. Christmas hours are posted in every post office. Some locations may have limited hours on Christmas Eve. Priority Mail Express will be delivered on Christmas Day.

- Public libraries probably closed on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Check with your library to be sure.
- Metro-North will operate on its normal weekday schedule on Thursday, December 23. There will be additional trains for early departures on all lines. On Friday, December 24, Metro-North will operate on a special Saturday schedule with additional trains. For Saturday, December 25, Metro-North will operate on a special schedule with hourly service on all lines and regular weekend service on secondary lines. Bee-Line buses will operate on Friday December 24 on a weekday schedule. There will be no Christmas Day service for Bee-Line buses in Westchester.

- Many malls, including the Palisades Center, will be closed on Christmas Day. Like many, the Palissades Center will have shortened hours on Christmas Eve, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call your favorite store for their holiday hours.
- If you decide to have dinner on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, or even take out, it would be advisable to call ahead to see if your favorite restaurant is open.
