La Jolla Business Roundup: Pizza on Pearl and Whaling Bar prepare for a return to the Village

What’s old is new to La Jolla again, with two companies in varying stages of return.

Pearl Pizza

The Mr. Moto Pizza House at 617 Pearl St. closed abruptly earlier this month and will reopen as Pizza on Pearl in the coming months.

Mr Moto owner Gibran Fernandez confirmed the restaurant would reopen as Pizza on Pearl and said the menu “would go back to what it was,” but declined to provide further details or information. ” publicly identify the owners of the site.

Pizza on Pearl operated in La Jolla from around 2011 until it became Mr. Moto in 2018. As Pizza on Pearl it specialized in New York style thin crust pizzas, offering whole or sliced pizzas.

Mr. Moto’s other locations in the San Diego area – such as North Park, Pacific Beach, Little Italy, and others – are still open.

The whaling bar

After nearly 10 years of absence, the Whaling Bar de La Jolla will return to the La Valencia Hotel on Prospect Street to its original location (now Café La Rue).

La Valencia Marketing Director Annalize Dewhurst said the design team is filtering more than 300 responses to a survey the hotel conducted last year. Thus, no renovation schedule has been communicated.

The windows of what will be the Whaling Bar of the La Valencia hotel are lined with decorative paper bearing the words “An icon, always an icon”.

“The Whaling Bar continues to be a priority for our team, and the survey responses we received from over 300 alumni show just how excited the community is about the Whaling Bar,” said Dewhurst. “[This year] we aim to finalize a design that celebrates the rich history and history of the Whaling Bar in the current space. Like all businesses and industries, the challenges of the past two years have slowed the project down, but we are eager to continue with the design phase.

Further details were not available by the La Jolla Light’s press deadline.

La Valencia opened as an apartment hotel in December 1926. Whaling Bar opened in the late 1940s and has hosted writers, Hollywood figures and more. The Whaling Bar officially closed on February 14, 2013 and became Café La Rue later in the year. ??
