Kanwaljeet Singh Toor, one of the defendants in the rupee 60,000 crore Pearl Group scam case, who was currently being held at Rohini Prison in the nation’s capital, has died, officials said on Tuesday.
Confirming the development, Director General (Prisons) Sandeeep Goyal told IANS that 62-year-old remand prisoner Toor was taken to the city’s Dr Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital on January 1 for pressure low blood pressure.
“Toor died in hospital the next day, Sunday January 2,” Goyal said.
On December 23, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said it had arrested 11 people, including Toor in connection with the Pearls group scam case of Rs 60,000 crore.
Chander Bhushan Dhillon, Prem Seth, Manmohan Kamal Mahajan, Mohanlal Sehajpal, Kanwaljit Singh Toor are the employees of the Pearls group who have been placed under arrest. He said they had previously recorded a preliminary investigation into the Supreme Court’s instructions against Pearls Group, which allegedly raised around Rs 60,000 crore from around five crore investors across the country by illegally operating various trading programs. investment, without any legal approval, with the intention of deceiving them.
The defendants had given a land guarantee to investors to attract them. People were told they would get 12.5% interest. 100 if they invested. They were offered free accident insurance and a tax-free maturity on their investments. The defendants had also promised investors that the value of the land they were buying would multiply rapidly.
Later, based on the investigation, a case was filed against Ms PGF Limited, Ms PACL Limited, Nirmal Singh Bhangoo and other directors of these two flagship companies of the Pearls group.
During the investigation, Nirmal Singh Bhangoo, Sukhdev Singh, Subrata Bhattacharya and Gurmeet Singh were arrested in January 2016. Later in April 2016, the CBI filed its first indictment against them.
CBI had identified properties of Nirmal Singh Bhangoo worth Rs 1.85 lakh crore at the current market rate across the country. The accused had also invested in Australian companies.
Australian cricketer Bret Lee was a Brand Ambassador for the Pearl Group and the IPL “Kings XI Punjab” team was also co-sponsored by the Pearl Group.
To investigate the role of other defendants in this multi-crore financial scam, which had harmed the interests of millions of investors, further investigation into the case was continued.
Notably, the Directorate of Enforcement is also investigating a case of PMLA in this regard.
