Rockland Utility Customer Reports Attempted Door-to-Door Scam

PEARL RIVER, NY – After a report of two men posing as O&R workers door-to-door in Stony Point, officials from Orange and Rockland Utilities, Inc. have urged customers to confirm that anyone posing as an O&R contractor at their front door is not a fake.

Ask to see a company ID, they said.

The client reported on social media that two people who were door-to-door around 7 p.m. came to her house saying they wanted to alert her to “government credits about to expire”, presumably on purchases of solar power, O&R officials said. The client called them O&R representatives because, she said, they told her they were “working with O&R to reduce costs.”

Customers should not allow access to their home under any circumstances before confirming a person’s identity and affiliation with O&R, company officials said. For example, many energy service companies and solar marketers solicit businesses door-to-door and describe themselves as “working for O&R” or “working with O&R” because they work in related, if not complementary, fields. . But, except in rare cases, they are not employed by O&R either directly or on a contractual basis.

All O&R employees and contractors are required to carry color photo identification cards during their work day. If someone shows up at your door claiming to be an O&R employee or contractor, ask to see the card. If you are still not satisfied with the identity of the person, call O&R at 1-877-434-4100.
