In pokemon shiny diamond and shiny pearl pokemon, trainers have different ways to catch Pokémon that go beyond wild encounters. In Diamond/Pearl, some Pokemon could only be caught using the Honey Trees scattered around Sinnoh. This mechanic is making a comeback brilliant diamond and shiny pearl. However, a new feature called Grand Underground makes it much easier to encounter Honey Tree-exclusive Pokémon.
Most Bug-type Pokémon aren’t known for their average strength or stats, but there are a few exceptions. The Vespicen Pokémon is a Bug/Flying-type Pokémon with high defense and special defense. However, the only way to get Vespiquen is to evolve a female Combee.
Where to find and evolve Combee
There are two different ways to get Combee Brilliant Diamond/Brilliant Pearl: Honey Trees and the Great Underground.
Unfortunately, catching Combee alone isn’t enough. If the Combee is a male, then it cannot evolve. This means that if trainers want Vespiquen, they will have to keep trying until they catch a female Combee. by Combee the male/female ratio is 87.5%, 12.5%. The difference between a female and a male Combee is the female wedge-shaped red forehead; Male Combees don’t have that.
honey trees
The Honey Tree method is unlocked first. It involves reaching City of Floaroma and get the key to the works for the wind turbines in the valley. After that, players will be directed to Floaroma Meadow and must defeat two Team Galactic Grunts. Defeating them allows trainers to buy honey and spread it on golden trees around Sinnoh.
It takes 6 hours for a Pokémon to appear on Honey Trees. After 24 hours, players will need to apply honey to the tree again, so be sure to check after 6 hours. Combee has a 22% chance of spawning on Common Honey Trees and a 32% chance of spawning on Rare Honey Trees. The combes encountered on the honey trees can be from level 5 to level 15.
big metro
A faster but easier way to get Combee is to search for it in the big metro. This will only be available after crossing Eterna Forest with Cheryl and reaching Eterna Town. Get the Man’s Explorer Kit right next to the Pokemon Center to unlock the Grand Underground.
In the Grand Underground, there are spaces that appear on the Grand Underground Map. These are known as sanctuaries, and are where roaming Pokemon can be encountered. With only the Oreburgh City gym badge, Grand Underground Pokemon will be around level 16 and will be hard to catch. Bring a strong team of Pokemon with at least one capable of inflicting status ailments and plenty of Poke Balls.
Combee appears in prairie cave and sunny cave hiding places. It’s much easier to verify Combee’s gender this way since players will be able to physically see the Pokemon before entering battle. If Combee does not have a red forehead, leave the room and return until the female Combee appears.
To evolve into Vespiquen, Combee must reach level 21. Since Combee in the Great Underground can be as low as level 16 all the way up to level 20, trainers may only need to give him a Rare Candy to raise it from level 20. to 21. If it is of a lower level, have it battle other Pokemon in the Great Underground to level up faster.
More information about Combee & Vespiquen
Combee and Vespiquen are both Bug/Flying type, but one is significantly stronger than the other and can be a powerful asset to the team.
Although Combee’s base stat (244) is higher than Pokemon like Kricketot or Caterpie, its shallow movepool and inability to learn all but one TM doesn’t make it very useful in battle. Combee knows the following moves:
- Pleasant odor
- Gust
- wrestling bug
- Insect bite
Meanwhile, Vespiquen has a base stat total of 474 and will learn a variety of moves that can give him cover in battle.

---|---|---|
combee | HP: 30 | 244 |

Vespiquen | HP: 70 | 474 |

Both Combee and Vespiquen have the following type effectiveness:
Strengths: | Bug, Grass, Psychic, Dark, Fighting |
Weaknesses: | Rock (x4), Flying, Fire, Electric, Ice |
Resistors: | Insect, Grass, Fight |
Immunities: | Earth |
As a Bug/Flying dual-type, Vespiquen and Combee have extreme weakness to Rock-type moves. Unfortunately, the TMs Vespiquen can learn don’t give him much cover against Rock types. However, Vespiquen can learn Poison-type moves like Sludge Bomb which are super effective against Fairy and Grass-type Pokémon.
Since Vespiquen is more of a low-speed defensive Pokemon, it’s best if it has a Bold (+Def, -Attk) or one Mischievous (+Def, -Sp.Attk) Nature. Any nature that reduces defense/special defense growth is not recommended for Vespiquen.
Finally, Vespiquen has the pressure ability, which increases the PP usage of an enemy’s moves by one PP. For a hidden ability, Vespiquen has Unnerve, which prevents an opponent from eating their Held Berry. Of the two abilities, pressure is preferred for Vespiquen because he doesn’t need to rely on his opponent to hold an object (berry) to function.
