While most people keep their eyes on the ball during the World Series, at GTC we keep our eyes on the jewelry. Specifically, Atlanta Braves outfielder Joc Pederson’s pearl necklace. Chain necklaces are almost as de rigueur as the baseball uniform itself, but this is the first time pearls have appeared on the field (not even the ladies of A league apart dared). Plus, fans are now showing up to the game with their own necklaces: a crowd of beer-drinking, skull-wearing baseball caps clutching their beads at the top of the ninth.
Pederson is onto something. In the 16th and 17th centuries, pearls were considered the highest form of jewelry because they were natural wonders (unlike gemstones which had to be cut and polished). Royal and noble men wore them frequently, King Charles I wore a single oversized pearl earring to his execution (it was his signature after all).
Pearls were the ultimate power accessory – and they still are today. Harry Styles channeled royal swagger at the Met Ball in 2019, when he put not one but two pearl earrings in his left ear, the same as Charles I. Definitely A$AP Rocky, who regularly combines with brio of Edwardian-worthy gemstones with streetwear, learned how much even a single pearl can make a splash. And we don’t think it’s an accident the Atlanta Braves have won games since the Pederson Pearls debuted in September. Below, our favorite pearl jewelry for men to wear for any occasion.
